Robinson jumped onto the scene in 2007, when he brought in six interceptions in five games. Despite being suspended in ’08 for his role in the Florida State academic scandal, the standout corner is the poster boy for progression.
2008 proved to be another effective year for the defender, posting up impressive numbers and setting the bar for his younger defensive counterparts. Opposing quarterbacks were starting to wise up to Robinson’s cover skills so there were less balls thrown his way in ’08 and ’09.
Despite not having raked in a single interception in ’09, Robinson continued to display an array of position skills that make him one of the best corners to enter this year’s draft class.
His recovery speed is as good as Florida’s Joe Haden, especially along the sidelines. He uses his eyes to read and anticipate the quarterback’s throws and has the quick burst of speed to make up for any misreads. He excels at man coverage, utilizing the “island” technique that’s gained a lot of popularity in the NFL in recent years.
He uses his speed to create the illusion of space between the wide out and himself, then closes in for the break-up or the pick. His backpedal is flawless, he stays low and tight all the way into the zone. His zone coverage does leave something to be desired, but no more than any other cornerback ready for April.
Robinson’s physicality also isn’t the best as his tackles look weak at times and he isn’t known for throwing himself at bigger ball-carriers. He doesn’t always wrap up when he needs to but, as a cover corner, he ranked fifth in tackles on the Seminole defense in ’09 (52).
He has quick, active hands that excel at stripping the ball away from the opponent. At the line, he uses his big mitts to jam the wide out and keep the quarterback’s timing off point.
Overall, Robinson has what it takes to be successful at the next level. His inconsistency at the college level will scare off more than a few scouts, but patience and a successful showing at the combine next week in Indianapolis will do wonders for the former Florida State star.
Look for a team with all the pieces in place for a championship to pick up Robinson in hopes of plugging their defensive leaks. A team like Minnesota showed their inconsistencies at corner in the playoffs and could use a late first round acquisition to bolster their defense. Robinson’s cover corner ability would transition seamlessly to the Vikings defense in 2010.
