2012 NFL Week 1 Preview: Five Upsets to Watch For

If there is ever a time for a team in the NFL with huge expectations to lose it’s week 1. There isn’t one team that is fully ready, in shape or prepared. It just isn’t possible. There are surprise teams every year. Take the Buffalo Bills, for instance, to start last season. They knocked off Kansas City, Oakland, New England and Philadelphia, winning four out of their first five games. They surprised and looked like they could compete only to falter and circle the wagons like the traditional Buffalo Bills way.
I would also like to add that, even though I am a Giants fan, I would have had them on this list. The Giants are probably combing the tri-state area for cornerbacks as we speak. It was no secret that they had a weakness in the secondary.
With all that said and week 1 upon us, I give you my top five potential upsets for week 1:
Tennessee over New England - YES….YOU HEARD ME! If you check our writer picks I even picked the Titans to upset the Pats in week 1. Call me crazy but when are the top teams most vulnerable? Week 1. The hype around the Patriots is everywhere; as well it should be. The schedule top to bottom looks extremely favorable. However, I don’t think they go undefeated and have another 16-0 run. Tennessee could pose some problems for the Patriots. Chris Johnson and Jake Locker could have a field day against the Patriots defense. I’m simply saying that Tennessee could win this game in a shootout.
Jacksonville over Minnesota - Even with the Maurice Jones-Drew distraction this offseason the Jaguars could pull off a week 1 win. Minnesota might not have Adrian Peterson and though Toby Gerhart is no slouch, he isn’t Peterson. Last season, Jacksonville was pretty good on defense. It was their offense that lacked. MJD will play sparingly and some nice additions were made on offense with wide receivers Laurent Robinson and Justin Blackmon. Gabbert to Blackmon might be a more common phrase come Monday.
Tampa Bay over Carolina - This one would be tough but possible. New coach for Tampa in Greg Schiano, but he gets the most out of his players. Cam Newton will be tough to stop but Schiano might have the blueprint. Tampa also upgraded on offense with Dallas Clark at TE, Vincent Jackson at WR and rookie Doug Martin at RB. These additions only make Josh Freeman more capable to return to his 2010 form. Watch out for the Bucs!
San Diego over Oakland - This game is pretty even but most are picking Oakland. San Diego has been getting off on the wrong foot for years now. Digging a big hole only to somehow claw their way back into the division mix down the stretch. I know they lost Mike Tolbert and Ryan Matthews is injured but this may make the Chargers rely on Philip Rivers and the passing game. If the Chargers are going to win, it’s Rivers’ arm that has to do it. Week 1, they may be forced to do it.
St. Louis over Detroit - I know…impossible right. And yes…I agree that it would be very difficult for the Rams to pull this one out. But, Jeff Fisher is a great coach and is defensive minded. They probably don’t have the personnel to match up well with Detroit but if anyone can find an effective scheme it’s Fisher. Also, Detroit could be vulnerable on defense. Bradford has looked sharp and Steven Jackson looks solid. The Rams offense could score points and just might have enough to win in a shootout.
So there you have it; my five who could go down in week 1. Leave a comment and let me know who’s on YOUR upset list for week 1!!!
