2013 NFL Free Agency Rumors: Steven Jackson to Packers a Reality?

St. Louis Rams

Former St. Louis Rams’ running back Steven Jackson is being rumored to be working on a three year contract with the Green Bay Packers. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported the story on Wednesday wich proves there is mutual interest from both sides.

The two parties are prefectly logical for each other. Jackson has been the primary weapon in a less than stellar offense in St. Louis since 2005. Yet, with no other major stars on offense to direct attention away from him, Jackson has rushed for over 1,000 yards every season. He’s also done this with some putrid offensive lines. The guy has never played for a true winning team let alone a legit contender.

Green Bay has not had a running back threat since Ryan Grant busted out years ago. Adding a guy like Jackson in the backfield would only complement the pass heavy attack and make opposing defenses have to respect the run more. An extra step to guys like Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson and James Jones is like a half-mile head start in any race.

The only question surrounding Jackson has been his health. He’s taken quite a beating while in St. Louis and he’s been labeled somewhat of a risk at this point in his career. However, Jackson has been very durable for the most part and it’s hard to imagine that he’d take similar punishment in Green Bay. The reward is truly greater than the risk for Green bay. And Jackson gets a chance to play for a true contender. The two are a perfect match and I think a deal is done very shortly.
