2013 NFL Rumors: 49ers to Trade For Darrelle Revis?

The San Francisco 49ers have been at the center of the NFL offseasons’ attention and it seems they’re at it again. A day after a deal to send QB Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs, rumors are swirling that the 49ers are among the “handful of teams” to be interested in courting the New York Jets’ star shut-down corner; CB Darrelle Revis.

Reports have been two-sided on this rumor. However, when looking at the two sides it makes more sense that the two would be perfect for each other in making a deal.

Looking at this from the Alex Smith trade going forward, you could see this deal happening. When the trade of Smith officially goes through, the Niners will have 12 total picks along with 3 compensatory picks in the upcoming draft. As the 49ers, with all these draft picks, wouldn’t you be one of the top partners for a trade with the Jets for Revis. Absolutely! The only question is which and how many picks would it take to land Revis.

Presumably, as the 49ers, you would be trading away draft picks to get Revis for one year as he has one year remaining on his current deal. His deal will call for a total of $6 million. Not too bad to get a shut down corner. By adding him, you fill the one hole of a top defense that just went to the Super Bowl. This move would have to make the 49ers the NFC favorite, if not, the NFL favorite to win the Super Bowl. That’s how big this move could potentially be.

To me, it’s the most likely of all the scenarios. The 49ers get the shut-down guy they need at a discounted rate for a year with the possibility of extending the deal. The Jets would get more picks to get younger and fill some much needed holes. It’s a perfect match.

FANTASY ANALYSIS

The only real analysis is the 49ers defense. As a top defense already last year, this would absolutely rank them the #1 overall defense in fantasy. San Francisco’s only glaring weakness is in their seconday, and landing Revis would help secure that.
