NFL Rumor Mill: Denver Broncos Reportedly in Trade Talks for an Eagles QB

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a team chock full of talent at a single position, but the Philadelphia Eagles are exactly that—a team with too much talent at quarterback.

Kyle Orton

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Eagles have received numerous calls on all three of their current quarterbacks. Denver, Buffalo, and Cleveland have reportedly shown the most interest.

After failing to surpass eight wins for the second year in a row, the Broncos are rethinking their offensive weapons, and Kyle Orton is no exception. Last year, the Broncos shocked the sports world by trading their franchise quarterback Jay Cutler to Chicago in exchange for Orton and draft picks.

After winning their first five games, it looked like new head coach Josh McDaniels knew something the rest of us didn’t. Orton somehow looked better in blue and orange and was showing us quarterbacking skills we’d never seen from him before.

Then the losses came. It was as if the plug that held the flood had been pulled and suddenly the leaks in the Denver offense were evident. Now there are talks that the front office is considering bringing in a new quarterback by way of free agency, trade, or draft. In other words, whatever it takes.

If Denver is indeed considering a trade with the Eagles, it’s very possible that either Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, or even Kevin Kolb could be a Bronco before the start of the 2010 season.

The team also holds the 11th pick in the draft, and, while quarterback may not be the most prolific need, they have an opportunity to nab a player like Jimmy Clausen, Sam Bradford, or Colt McCoy, either of which are tempting for an organization looking to find their quarterback of the future.

If the Broncos want to win now, though, they will most likely go for the option of free agency. McNabb is a tried-and-tested veteran who is showing no signs of slowing down. Vick is still questionable as a starting quarterback, but his athleticism sure would serve as a bright spot on Denver’s roster.

That leaves Kolb, a young quarterback who hasn’t had many options to show his fortitude. In his three games as a starter last season, he flashed moments of brilliance and promise. He would be the least expensive of the three, as well, and could even take a year on the bench behind Orton while the team decides his fate.

Denver’s trade options are slim, but the weapons available to them would demand a high return. Obviously, Orton is going to be a viable trade option if the Broncos do indeed go after another quarterback. Brandon Marshall would also demand some weight in a possible trade, and, even though it’s a long shot, Elvis Dumervil is now an elite sack-master and would be a highly sought-after acquirement by any team.

It’s all speculation for now, but judging from the Denver blogs and the obscure reports of ESPN’s finest, we may very well see a new quarterback in Mile High Stadium next year.
