Alex Smith Returns to 49ers for One More Year

2010 Fantasy Football

According to Tony Softli via Twitter, the San Francisco 49ers have re-signed former number one overall pick Alex Smith to a one-year deal.

The deal is worth roughly $5 million, and will have Smith coming back as the expected starter, while second-round pick Colin Kaepernick is groomed as the eventual successor.

Fantasy Analysis

We knew he’d be coming back (as did everyone else), but the real question is whether or not he keeps Kaep’ on the sidelines, as well as whether or not the 49ers feel the need to bring in another veteran (say, Matt Hasselbeck?). It looks like Smith will be the guy, however, although he can’t be relied upon as a true QB1 in fantasy football due to inconsistency and Kaepernick’s presence.
