Jahvid Best Will Start 2012 on PUP List
It’s official. According to Dave Birkett via Twitter, the Detroit Lions have officially place running back Jahvid Best (concussions) on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. Best will now miss the first six weeks of the NFL season, and would be able to suit up for a game in week eight, at the earliest.
The move wasn’t a surprise, although many were holding out hope that Best would be cleared to play. It wasn’t to be, however, as Best still isn’t 100% following concussions in 2011. He’s a lock to miss half the year, and there is a strong chance he might not play at all this season.
Often injured back Kevin Smith will open the season as the starter with Keiland Williams as his top backup until Mikel Leshoure (suspension) can return from a two-game absence.
Best is an explosive back with loads of potential, but he just can’t stay healthy. He was a risk heading into the season, but being placed on the PUP kills even late-round value. He’ll be waiver wire fodder if he ever gets healthy enough to suit up in 2012. For the first eight weeks, the Lions will rotation Kevin Smith, Mikel Leshoure and Keiland Williams. No running back in Detroit can be counted on for consistent fantasy production.
