Green Bay Packers Roster Cuts: James Starks to Make Team?
James Starks has had his highs and lows this off-season. After doing his part to push out veteran Ryan Grant after the end of 2011, it appeared Starks might finally be ready to take over as the team’s feature back.
Unfortunately, he seemed to regress once camp opened, which prompted the Green Bay Packers to look outside for help in the form of free agent Cedric Benson. Benson has looked great by all accounts, and his solid play recently sparked the idea that the under-whelming Starks could be on the roster bubble.
Apparently, that was simply a rumor. According to the Packer Report’s Bill Huber, Starks’ place with the team is “safe”. Per Huber, backup running back Marc Tyler has already been released, and Brandon Saine could still be cut.
Starks will rotate with fellow backup Alex Green behind new starter Cedric Benson.
Once a sleeper darling, Starks has crashed down to reality at a rapid rate over the last month. Benson is the back to own in Green Bay, although the fact that the team is holding onto Starks shows they haven’t given up on him developing into a starter just yet. He can’t be drafted, though.
