Vick Ballard A Must-Start Against Jets in Week 6?
Rookie running back Vick Ballard will get the start this week for the injured Donald Brown (pictured) for the Indianapolis Colts. We anticipate decent fantasy numbers, but nothing spectacular, from Ballard. Veteran back Mewelde Moore stands to gain most of the passing snaps for the Colts. We expect the emotionally-charged Colts to compete on the road so a good performance might be in the offing for Ballard.
The Jets run defense has been horrific this year, yielding 172 yards per game, or about 60 more than the league average. Only the Saints have been worse, but only by a fraction of a yard. The Jets often bend but don’t break, meaning running yards will be available. If Andrew Luck doesn’t feel pressure to win this game by himself, expect Ballard to gain more than 100 yards. His fantasy success will be determined by his ability to find the end zone, since we don’t expect many receptions.
In two years at Mississippi State, Ballard tallied 2,157 yards for a 5.7 yard average. With Brown out at least 2 weeks, we’d expect Ballard to be comfortable enough against a bad run defense to be productive. He’s a lower-tier 2nd RB or possible flex, particularly if you have bye week situations to deal with.
