Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew Will Report to Camp on Sunday

Maurice Jones-Drew

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN via Twitter, the Jacksonville Jaguars star running back, and best player, will report to camp on Sunday effectively ending his 38 day holdout from the team. Jones-Drew could be fined $1.2 million dollars, but that is most likely not going to happen, as both sides will probably just forgive and forget.

MJD rushed for an NFL high 1,606 yards last season with 11 total touchdowns in his six season as a professional, but only in his third full-time season as the main running back for the Jaguars. With only two years left on his current contract, Jones-Drew wanted more money, which he deserves, and was looking for a contract similar to Matt Forte, who earned $32 million over four years this offseason.

I don’t think MJD will get his contract re-negotiated this season or next season, which would make he a restricted free agent for the 2014 season. Then the Jaguars could place the franchise tag on him for one or two seasons, for a hefty price might I add, then let him walk after that.

Fantasy Analysis

If you were able to snag MJD later in the draft as many owners declined to draft him based on his holdout, you must be rejoicing right about now. I for one still drafted him in the first round way back in August and couldn’t be happier right about now.

Expect Jones-Drew to be on a play limit for Week 1 and might only see 8-12 carries. He has said that he has continued to workout and stay in shape during his hold out, but we’ll let the Jaguars coaching staff be the judge of that. Stay tuned to NFLSoup, as we will continue to update his status for Week 1.

On the other hand Rashad Jennings’ fantasy value will take a bit of a hit. I know many fantasy players took a flyer on the backup running back in hopes MJD was going to continue his holdout throughout the season, but that’s not the case anymore. Jennings will still have some value going forward, especially for Week 1, as he is sure to get the bulk of the carries, but as the season goes on, he becomes more of a No. 4 RB unless MJD suffers an injury.

These days of austerity as well as relative stress about getting debt, many people balk contrary to the idea of having a credit card to make acquisition of merchandise or maybe pay for a vacation, preferring, instead to rely on a tried and also trusted means of making payment – cash. However, if you have the cash available to make the purchase completely, then, paradoxically, this is the best time for them to use the cards for several causes.
