Jake Locker the Favorite to Start in Tennessee?
The quarterback competition in Tennessee may not be as close as many think. According to NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi, Jake Locker may have the inside track on the starting quarterback job for the Tennessee Titans heading into the 2012 NFL season.
Lombardi alluded to the fact that he has “learned” that Locker is the favorite.
This makes complete sense, as Locker is the better talent than last year’s starter, Matt Hasselbeck, and his skill-set also better suits the Titans’ goal of putting a more explosive passing game on the field.
With elite size, arm strength, pocket presence and mobility, Locker has serious top-10 fantasy potential in 2012 if he’s given the starting job from day one. That certainly won’t mean there won’t be any bumps in the road, but with a re-dedicated Chris Johnson and a slew of big-play weapons in the passing game, Locker could be set up for a fantastic year.
The only problem here is that right now this is a rumor, and there’s still a competition that needs to play out. While Locker is without a doubt the superior takent right now, Hasselbeck is arguably more accurate and composed, and is probably the better leader, as well. However, there’s reason to believe Locker could quickly become a very good quarterback once handed the reigns.
In fantasy speak, Locker is about to bust. Think Tim Tebow with more control, better accuracy, a bigger arm and a better surrounding cast. The minute Locker becomes the official starter, he’ll be cemented inside my top-20 quarterback rankings for 2012.
