Matt Ryan Says Julio Jones Could Breakout in 2012
The Atlanta Falcons continue to buzz about second-year wide receiver Julio Jones. And they’re doing it loudly.
First star wide receiver Roddy White admitted his targets could go down in favor of the explosive Jones, and now quarterback Matt Ryan is publicly predicting a big year for Jones, as well.
“I think he is going to have a great year,” said Ryan, “I thought he was extremely productive for us last year and I think this year he is going to be even better than he was”.
If the quarterback and the other top receiver says it, you might as well start believing it. It only makes sense that Jones would improve, really, as last off-season (his first in the league) he dealt with a lockout-shortened schedule, as well as some nagging injuries during the season.
Still, when it was all said and done, Jones was a very impressive (and effective) first year receiver, posting 959 yards and eight touchdowns on just 54 receptions. And he did this despite Roddy White demanding 100+ receptions, and tight end Tony Gonzalez soaking up another 80+.
If Jones gets more involved as White and Ryan suggest, he could easily approach 70+ receptions, 1,000+ yards and 10+ touchdowns. If that happens, Jones could possibly rise from the 17th ranked wide receiver to somewhere in the top-10 in fantasy football.
