Monday Night Football Fantasy Versus | Week 1
After a great Sunday of NFL football in Week 1, we now get treated to two games on Monday night football. The Cincinnati Bengals will take on the Baltimore Raves at 7:00 pm est, while the San Diego Chargers take on their division foe, the Oakland Raiders at 10:15 pm est, both games can be seen on ESPN.
With four teams in action tonight, you might have some tough decisions to make on who to start on your fantasy teams. We will try and give you some good advice to make your decision a bit easier.
Here are some of the best match-ups in our Monday Night Football Fantasy Versus:
Quarterbacks
Joe Flacco (Ravens) vs. Phillip Rivers (Chargers)
A lot of fantasy experts seem to think Flacco will take that next step up and become a top 10 fantasy quarterback this season. I’m not quite buying it yet. He looked good in preseason albeit against very vanilla coverages. I still have my doubts.
Rivers lost his best receiver in the offseason in Vincent Jackson, and he lost one of his better wideouts during the preseason, Vincent Brown, so he has some question marks regarding his season as well.
For tonight, I’ll take Rivers over Flacco, but not by much.
Carson Palmer (Raiders) vs. Andy Dalton (Bengals)
Andy Dalton has A.J. Green, while Palmer has a plethora of average receivers. I’m taking Palmer over Dalton, based on the defenses they will be going up against.
Running Backs
BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Bengals) vs. Ronnie Brown (Chargers)
You’re obviously starting Ray Rice and Darren McFadden if you have them, so I’m not even going to include them here.
Ryan Mathews is out for tonight’s game, which forces Brown to the forefront and should get the bulk of the carries, but you not starting him over Green-Ellis. BJGE is the guy you want tonight over Brown.
Wide Receivers
Torrey Smith (Ravens) vs. Malcom Floyd (Chargers)
I left A.J. Green out for a reason, you’re starting him regardless, as he is a top 10 receiver every week.
Smith has been on a lot of experts sleeper lists as a guy that can break out and have a huge season, which I’m okay with. Floyd is now the main guy in San Diego, so he has a lot of value with Philip Rivers throwing him the ball.
I’m going to lean on starting Smith over Floyd, but both receivers could be in for very productive fantasy games.
Robert Meachem (Chargers) vs. Anquan Boldin (Ravens) vs. Darrius Heyward-Bay (Raiders) vs. Denarius Moore (Raiders)
Denarius Moore (hamstring) is questionable for tonight’s game, so consider him a shaky start even if it’s announced he’s going to suit up and play. DHB could be in-line for a big game, against a very pedestrian Chargers secondary, especially in PPR leagues.
Meachem and Boldin are low-end No. 3 receivers for tonight’s game, but I like Meachem a bit more than Boldin, again it’s because of who’s throwing him the ball, Philip Rivers.
I’ll go ahead and rank them DHB, Meachem, Boldin, and Moore.
Tight Ends
Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) vs. Ed Dickson (Ravens)
Antonio Gates is the only No. 1 TE you should be starting this week.
Gresham and Dickson have value in deeper leagues as of right now, but should still be considered No. 2 TE’s. I like Gresham over Dickson tonight.
Kickers
Sebastian Janikowski (Raiders) vs. Nate Kaeding (Chargers) vs. Justin Tucker (Ravens)
Janikowski is the best kicker out of the bunch, so he get the number one ranking for me.
Undrafted rookie Justin Tucker is an interesting name to watch after being out long time starter Billy Cundiff in Baltimore.
I’m okay with starting Kaeding or Tuckers tonight, but I’ll give the slight edge to Tucker.
Team Defense
Baltimore D/ST vs. Cincinnati D/ST vs. San Diego D/ST vs. Oakland D/ST
Baltimore was drafted as a top 10 defense in fantasy this year, so you’re going to start them no matter what. I could see Cincinnati being started in many leagues, but San Diego and Oakland should be left alone at this point.
I’ll go ahead and rank them Baltimore, Cincinnati, Oakland, and San Diego.
