Patriots Cut Ties With Running Back Joseph Addai
It made sense early in the off-season, but as the season drew closer, many began to think former Indianapolis Colts running back Joseph Addai would be a major long shot to make the New England Patriots final roster. It turns out those naysayers would be right.
According to reports, the Patriots have released Joseph Addai, and will enter 2012 with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Danny Woodhead topping their depth chart. Addai, 29, can still pick up the blitz and has versatility to bring to the table, but he was never particularly explosive and no longer has the necessary burst to be a feature back.
After two injury-plagued seasons to end his Indianapolis tenure, the quick release likely signals the end of Addai’s career.
Addai was never a true threat to Ridley or Vereen, but it’s still surprising to see him get dropped so quickly. His departure means Woodhead and Vereen will likely rotate on third downs now, and likely ensures Ridley of the “starting” job.
