Rashard Mendenhall Headed For PUP List?

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall went down with a torn ACL in Week 17 of the 2011 seasons, and was already a long-shot to make it back for the start of the season. Per multiple reports, it’s likely he misses the first six weeks.
SI’s Peter King firmly believes Mendenhall will be out for at least the first six weeks, saying that Mendenhall is “not ready to play football”.
In his weekly Monday morning column, King also said, ”I think if your fantasy draft is tomorrow, you’d be smart to pick Isaac Redman ahead of Rashard Mendenhall”.
This seconds a recent report that had Steelers’ GM Kevin Colbert suggesting Mendenhall would start the year on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list, which would ensure he would miss the team’s first six games.
The news coming from more than one source should speak volumes, and it’s looking more and more likely that Mendenhall won’t be of much good use to fantasy owners in the first half of the season, if at all in 2012.
The news gives current starter Isaac Redman more solid value, and as King suggests, you should most definitely be selecting Redman before Mendenhall in fantasy drafts. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t draft Mendenhall at all, however, as he should make it back at some point in 2012 and could provide value.
