Tyrann Mathieu to Enter 2013 NFL Draft?

2013 NFL Draft

The Honey Badger could be a steal if he declares.

Another LSU Tiger cornerback could be entering the NFL Draft. According to reports, former Tiger star corner Tyrann Mathieu could be set to declare for the 2013 NFL Draft, despite off-field troubles and a season away from the football field.

According to Jo Schad via Twitter, Mathieu is set to declare on Thursday, capping a tumultuous season in which he had several run-ins with drug related issues, and was suspended from the LSU football team.

While a troubled individual with character concerns, Mathieu still holds immense talent and potential. Despite missing a season of college football, he should still enter the 2013 NFL Draft as an intriguing prospect that some team will decide to take a chance on in the early to middle rounds.

Mathieu, widely known as “The Honey Badger”, combines a blend of elite return skills, natural fluid athleticism and great instincts to offer the potential of the total package at the cornerback position. While his ability in man coverage could use some more work (mostly experience), Mathieu excels in zone coverage, making plays on the ball, and tackling. Even if an NFL team is concerned about his development early on, they could simply explain using a relatively high pick on him for his electric return ability.

His talent makes him a first-round pick, in my opinion. However, with everything considered, he’s probably looking at the second-round, at best. Look for an official scouting report and updates throughout the NFL off-season, as our own Keet Bailey will likely weigh in his thoughts on Mathieu’s prospects as the draft draws closer.
